Why More Exercise Isn't Always Better

It's an easy trap to fall into, where exercise is concerned. If I do more I'll get faster, leaner, better results, lose more and so it goes on.

There comes a point when your body can't recover from the amount of exercise you are doing.

You feel like you are putting loads of effort into your workouts but not getting rewarded for the increase.

Our body only has a limited amount of energy each day - directing your focus to maximise that energy will yield much better results than draining the battery every single day.

When you push your body beyond the point where you have stopped progressing then you usually start to see a gradual decline in performance.

You can only progress from the amount of exercise your body can absorb and adapt to.

This graph shows very clearly what is happening to your performance.

Supercompensation is where you start to see the reward for all your hard work.

Involution is where you start to regress i.e. you are not recovering from the work you are doing.

When you don't allow your body enough recovery you start from a lower point in the next workout.

Our bodies are amazing but you only get away with this type of behaviour for so long, trust me I know from first hand experience. What happens is you start to over reach and you start to see worse results, your energy levels really suffer, you become very irritable, mentally you can find it difficult to stay focused and this is often a period of time when injury and illness happen.

Even good things can become bad if they are excessive.

Exercise is good for the body but without adequate rest and recovery you might struggle to progress your fitness and strength.

Exercise + Rest & Recovery = Results
