Why Women Who Don't Love Lifting Weights Still Need To Do It!

Not every woman I meet is excited about lifting weights, shocker I know!!!

You might prefer to walk, do a yoga class, or you have no inclination to exercise.

But here’s the truth: strength training isn’t just for people who love the gym (you also don't need to go to a gym!), it’s a non-negotiable for women who want to feel strong, healthy, and independent as they age.

The Benefits You’ll Notice

  • Confidence in your body: You’ll feel steadier, stronger, and more capable in everyday life whether that’s carrying shopping, picking up children, or making you better at the main sport in your life.

  • Improved body composition: Lifting weights helps preserve and build lean muscle, which shapes your body and helps mitigate age related muscle loss.

  • Boosted energy and mood: Strength training can help regulate hormones, reduces stress, and gives you a mental lift.

The Benefits You Don’t See Right Away

  • Bone health: Women naturally lose bone density with age, especially after menopause. Strength training slows this decline, reducing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Fractures in your 60s 70s or 80s can be life changing if you have little to no bone density.

  • Metabolic health: More muscle helps your body manage blood sugar, lowers your risk of type 2 diabetes, and supports good overall heart health.

  • Joint protection: Strong muscles mean less strain on your joints, which helps prevent aches and injuries.

Long-Term You Will Be Grateful

If you are in your 40s or 50s, fast-forward a few decades. Imagine being able to get up from the floor easily, carry your own shopping, or open heavy doors without help. These aren’t small things, they’re the difference between living independently or relying on others. Women who don’t strength train are at a higher risk of losing muscle and mobility, making everyday activities harder and sometimes even dangerous.

I've asked my 80+ year old clients (who weren't told the importance of lifting weights) who are finding life physically difficult if they wish they had started strength training earlier, they all of course say yes!

The Bottom Line

You don’t need to love lifting weights. you just need to do it. I tell my clients all the time, it's okay if you don't enjoy lifting weights. I'm sure none of us would say brushing your teeth twice a day is enjoyable but you still do it (I hope!!!). So maybe you can do 2 short workouts a week to benefit your future body and health?

Think of it as an investment in your future self: stronger bones, more independence, and a body that lets you live life on your terms.

Start simple, stay consistent, and your future self will thank you x
