Part 1 - Why Lifting Weights Is The Secret To Thriving In Your 40s/50s And Beyond

I wanted to write a series of posts to help inspire women and especially women over 40 to start to lift weights. Not to demonise you if you don't but to help you understand why it's important to start, how it can help you live your life, not to mention the way you feel in a body that is strong and robust, not frail and feeble as you age.

I know the word “weights” can sound a bit intimidating. Maybe you picture bodybuilders, heavy barbells, or sweaty gyms packed with people half your age. But that’s not what I mean. Strength training is simply giving your body a bit of resistance, whether that’s a dumbbell, a kettlebell, or even your own bodyweight so your muscles stay strong, your bones stay solid, and your energy keeps up with the life you want to live.

Why It Matters Now

Here’s the thing no one really tells us: after 40, we start to naturally lose muscle. It’s one of the main reasons everyday things can feel harder like carrying shopping bags, climbing stairs, or even just getting up from the sofa quickly. But the amazing part? Lifting weights stops that process and even turns it around. You can literally rebuild your strength at any age.

The Benefits You’ll Actually Feel

  • More energy for the things you love doing.

  • Stronger bones so you’re protecting yourself against osteoporosis and falls becoming life changing

  • Less stiffness and fewer aches because your muscles take the load instead of your joints.

  • Confidence that quiet feeling of “I can handle this.”

And let’s be honest there’s nothing like the moment you realise you can lift something heavy that used to feel difficult. It makes you feel capable in a whole new way.

It’s About Life, Not the Gym

Strength training isn’t about living in the gym or lifting the heaviest weights in the room. It’s about making life easier:

  • Picking up grandchildren without worrying about your back.

  • Carrying shopping bags in one trip instead of three.

  • Having a robust body that feels amazing and strong, not frail and feeble. I have met women in their 50s who say they feel like this, I don't want you to feel like this, ever.

It’s not about changing who you are it’s about making sure the things you love stay part of your life for years to come.

You’re Not Too Old, and It’s Never Too Late

I can’t say this enough: it’s never too late to start. I’ve seen women in their 60s and 70s begin lifting and feel stronger within weeks. It’s not about becoming someone else, it’s about feeling like the best version of you.

Lifting weights isn’t about chasing youth or fitting into some fitness ideal. It’s about building the kind of strength that makes everyday life easier, keeps your body resilient, and gives you the freedom to enjoy the years ahead x
